Just recently went to see "Come From Away" the production itself was thoughtful funny and emotional with excellent actors, musicians and I'm sure an incredible team behind the scenes. Elgin Theater has kept it's beautiful heritage look including even the elevators. They have added all the more modern nessessaties, such as the lighting without taking away from the character of the building. The ground floor seating is built on a slope to help be able to see above the person in front of you. The theater overall is clean and the staff are very friendly and organized!
Went here for a tour during Doors Open Toronto. It is one of the few surviving music hall/vaudeville theaters. The Elgin suffered somewhat when it was converted to a Cinema but the Winter Garden was sealed up in the late 20's and only reopened when the building was restored and so is an authentic representation of it's appearance during the day. If at all possible I encourage everyone to take the tour, there are so many fascinating historical details.
Saw Come From Away my second time. Loved it both times. The theater is so comfortable. I love this theater! The sound was so sharp and clear, I heard every word. Noticed great accessibility for everyone. Ushers so attentive settled everyone in like skillful masters!
My first live professional Theatrical experience. And OH No, a musical(did I say I'm not a big fan of musicals) Come From Away. It was funny, witty, fast moving, well acted and sung...and I thought it was pretty Good - Bang On, as they say on The Rock. Now. It's OH No. My wife is going to want to drag me to another one. If it's as good as Come From Away, I want to be there.
From the great age of gilded halls, it is a visual treat. The stage is a bit small but it concentrates the performance. Sight lines are good, acoustics not bad, comfortable seats.Upper balcony does not induce vertigo (like the R.A.) and you won't give the patron in front of you a concussion when you cross your legs.
