Alton Mill Arts Centre
The captivating story of the Alton Mill Arts Centre unfolds through its transformation from a vacant and deteriorating space to a thriving hub for arts and heritage. In 1988, Jack Grant, a visionary entrepreneur, acquired the mill, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. Recognizing its potential, Jack’s son, Jeremy Grant, joined forces with local woodworker Carl Borgström to create a woodworking shop and artist studios within the mill’s east section.
The success of the studios inspired a grander vision. Together with Jefferson Mappin, president of the Headwaters Arts Festival, the Grants envisioned an arts and heritage centre that would breathe new life into the venue. Their plan encompassed art studios, galleries, creative offices, specialty retail, event spaces, and a restaurant. With construction commencing in 2006 and completion in 2009, the project harmoniously blended restoration, preservation, and revitalization.

Heintzman House is believed to have originally been built with adobe brick, consisting of just two rooms, representing the humble beginnings of what would become a cherished local landmark.
Throughout the years, the Heintzman House exchanged hands multiple times until it found its way into the possession of Charles Theodore Heintzman, a member of the renowned Heintzman family renowned for their piano business.
As the 1950s approached, the fate of the historic house seemed uncertain when it fell into the hands of real estate developers with plans to demolish the beloved structure. Yet, the local community rallied and together with the Town of Markham intervened and, in 1966, acquired the property, preserving it for generations to come.
Today, under the ownership and operation of the City of Markham, the Heintzman House continues to thrive as a venue for a myriad of events. Its charm and beautiful surroundings make it an ideal backdrop for weddings, parties, meetings, social gatherings, and even film and television productions.
The Vandenberg House

Throughout its storied existence, the building has evolved remarkably, transitioning from a vibrant marketplace to a popular bowling alley, to a beautiful movie theatre, and even a Town Hall. Following an extensive and meticulous restoration, the venue reclaimed its position as a premier arts and entertainment venue in 2009.
Today, 19 on the Park proudly serves as a treasured rental venue, offering its rich historical charm to a wide range of events. The George Brown House
The George Brown House is a historically significant landmark which serves as a vibrant and sustainable space, generating revenue through various avenues. The premises have office spaces, and conference facilities, and even provide a unique backdrop for weddings and film shoots.
Inside the building is a meticulously recreated Victorian library, housing 2,000 of George Brown’s books. The George Brown House also boasts a Victorian-inspired garden, lovingly established in 2000 through the generosity of the Trust’s Heritage Garden Conservancy Fund.
